Another good location to get theatre discounts in Toronto is:

http://www.seetorontonow.com/Visitor/Special-Deals/Theatre-And-Exhibits.aspx?type=6

There are often some good discount coupons available at that site.

I run Thumbs Up Theatre Toronto. We're a social group that goes to the theatre. I am a voluntter and it's free to join my group. It's for people who don't want to go to the theatre alone. That's how I know about all of these discounts! I'm always looking for good theatre deals for my members! :-)

I love Wayne's blog because he is an excellent source of information on theatre discounts.

If anyone knows about any deals, please let me know. You can contact me through my group at http://www.meetup.com/Thumbs-Up-Theatre-Toronto/

You can always get discounted tickets from T.O. Tix, which is a central Toronto ticketing outlet featuring half-price and discounted tickets on the day of performance and full-price tickets.

You have to go in person to the outlet to buy your tickets. You cannot buy your tickets over the phone or online.

The outlet is located in the Yonge-Dundas Square (southeast corner of Yonge and Dundas) in downtown Toronto.

Hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday, Noon to 6:30 p.m.

You can phone ahead on the day of performance to find out what tickets are being sold at a discount. The phone number is (416) 536-6468, ext. 40.

The phone line will only tell you which shows are on sale. It won't tell you the actual price. You will need to go to the outlet to find out the price.

Not all shows are available at T.O. Tix. Some theatre choose not to list discounted tickets with the outlet.

T.O. Tix's website is http://www.totix.ca/

I thought I would share my strategy for getting the best possible deal for theatre shows.

First of all, determine if a show can be extended. You can try to do this by calling the box office and simply asking.

If a show can't be extended, and if it appears it may be popular, you may have to buy regular-priced tickets because discounted tickets may not be offered.

An example of this is Barrymore, which will be playing at the Elgin Theatre soon and apparently cannot be extended.

On the other hand, Billy Elliot, which is also likely to be popular at the Canon Theatre, can be extended. In fact, it has already been extended several times (now into July) and it hasn't even opened yet!

For a show like Barrymore, the best strategy to get a reasonably-priced ticket is to buy far in advance because the cheapest-priced seats usually sell out first.

On the other hand, you might want to wait because even though the cheapest-priced seats might sell out, the more expensive ones might not and those could be offered at a discount later on.

Another option to save money is to purchase a ticket for a matinee instead of an evening performance, and, if possible, buy a ticket for a weekday other than Friday. Tickets are always cheaper for weekday and matinee performances.

For a show like Billy Elliot, you can employ the same strategy as for Barrymore. You can also just simply exercise patience and wait.

If a show is extendable, eventually discounted tickets may become available as the number of theatre goers starts to dwindle.

A great example of this is the very popular Sound of Music in 2009 at the Princess of Wales Theatre.

The show kept being extended until eventually tickets, which initially were only available at full price, were offered at increasing discounts, ultimately at half-price.

Another tip to obtain discount tickets for big shows is to sign up on those theatre's websites to get their electronic newsletters e-mailed to you so you can receive first notice of any special discount promotions.

In some cases, it's beneficial to subscribe to a theatre. One of the best deals going is Mirvish's subscriptions. I usually pay about $170 for a Mirvish subscription offering six or more shows.

For my 2010/2011 Mirvish subscription, the individual ticket prices worked out to about $28, which included some of Mirvish's biggest shows like Priscilla The Queen of the Dessert and Billy Elliot.

I forgot to add ... another tip to save money on ticket purchases is to buy your tickets in person from the box office rather than on the phone.

For Mirvish, you can save about $10 in service fees by purchasing in person at a box office at one of Mirvish's four theatres (Royal Alex, Princess of Wales, Canon and Panasonic Theatres).

After being given a huge runaround by the online phone sales, I also recently found out you can also save the service fees by buying directly at the box office at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.

You can also save service fees by buying in person at box offices at the Elgin Theatre/Winter Garden Theatre and St. Lawrence Centre, etc.

It's also worth checking to see if a theatre offers rush tickets. Mirvish offers rush tickets for students, but not for adults although it sometimes it has other promotions to get last-minute tickets.

A great place to get rush tickets is the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Since the theatre is so big, it sometimes doesn't sell out all the tickets so you can try for a rush ticket. You should check with the theatre first though because rush tickets may not be offered for all shows.

You won't see any promo codes for "Lion King" until it starts previews.

If you want to be kept informed of promo codes for it and other Mirvish shows, go to Mirvish.com, and sign up for their e-newsletters. That way, you'll get promo codes sent right to your e-mail.

I've saved a lot this way, by getting half-price tickets to a preview of "Priscilla" and to the opening night of "Mrs. Brown".

You can get $26 tickets for Bloodless using the promo code BTZOO.

I saw Bloodless last weekend with my group. The show is TERRIFIC! The subject is dark, but the script and music are very upbeat. I LOVED the show. It's a real shame the critics panned it.

You can get $15 tickets for The Normal Heart using the promo code NHNOW. It's good only for certain performances so check with the box office.

By the way, you can only use the NHNOW code at the Buddies in Bad Times Theatre box office. The NHMIRVISH code can only be used through Mirvish (TicketKing or in person at a Mirvish theatre box office).

Any discounts for Soulpepper Theatre?
02/03/13 @ 16:14
Comment from: Belinda [Visitor]
Jan:

The only way you can get reduced tickets at Soulpepper is to:

1. Buy a subscription.

2. Have a friend who is a subscriber. One of the perks of being a subscriber is that you can purchase additional tickets at a discount. The amount of the discount depends on how many plays the subscription is for. The more plays, the greater the discount the subscriber gets off additional tickets for friends.

3. Purchase a rush ticket on the day of performance. Rush tickets are available for any unsold seats and, therefore, are never guaranteed. They cost $22 for adults and $5 for youth 21 and under. HST and service fees are included in the price.

If the show is in the Marilyn & Charles Baillie Theatre space, there are usually about a dozen $12 standing-only rush tickets available. But you have to stand for the entire performance on the main floor just behind behind the last row. If you spot an empty seat during the first act, you may be able to sneak into that spot in the second act.

I just got tickets to The Comedy & Magic of Jean Pierre playing for one night only at The St.Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto. I saw him in Vegas 2 years ago and he's hilarious, if you use promo code "FACEBOOK" you can save 15% off tickets. I'd pay full price to see this show but it's always nice getting a discount.

Here's a link to the ticket page:
