Recycling Sucks, Earth hour is a sham

I was sitting on the couch writing this post on the EEEPC while listening to Po' Girl signing So Lazy on DNTO and thinking about how appropriate it was when the wifi went out. I was on the couch because it's nice and sunny in the family room and it was cold and dark downstairs because it's a basement.

Last week the garbage guys didn't take our cardboard boxes. We think it's because they were flattened and placed in another cardboard box but not tied with string. Sometimes I pine for the good old days when you put out 10 bags of garbage and it disappeared. Now my kitchen looks like a transfer station, boxes, cans, newspapers, organics, plastics all separated. It's worse because it's winter and the garage is full of cars. I expect that I'll end up building some sort of garbage and recycling management system in there this summer. This is probably a bit sacraligious to be saying on the day when we are doing Earth hour. Earth hour, what a crock, hold it on a Saturday in the evening, at least for me. Turn off the lights for an hour? Pleeeeassssee, let's do something significant, like actually try to reduce greenhouse gases. Spend the time writing an email to your MP telling them that the government needs to set some hard reduction targets and achieve them. Replace the incandescent bulbs in your house with higher efficiency bulbs or turn out half the bulbs in your house. Stop driving your minivan or SUV when there is only one person in the vehicle. Turn down your thermostat and put on a sweater. Do something meaningful and not symbolic. That's it for now.

Seems to me that many people miss the most valuable aspect of Earth Hour. That being drawing your attention to the need to conserve energy and resources. It’s advertising, pure and simple.

If a bit of energy is saved and there is a lesson learned in that turning off the lights saves energy, it’s a great start. If you learn to regularly turn off appliances that you aren’t using, even better. Maybe you’ll start looking into more efficient and environmentally responsible alternatives to current consumption patterns.

If this little bit of active (as opposed to passive) adverstising has made you think about, ask questions about and actively seek changes to individual, local and global consumption… AWESOME! Time to write your email/letter to the powers that be.

Don’t recycle.

And don’t use Wikipedia as your sole source of info…

Hey nutjob!

If you do your research you’ll notice that’s exactly what Earth Hour promotes, they have a whole list of things to do to minimise your carbon emissions. Just thot you might wanna know since you just spend your time sitting on the couch listening to poop girl! Stand up and make a change!

Earth hour is stupid. I actually have to DRIVE to work to make sure the outside lights are off for one hour, then I get to sit there in the dark where I plan to turn on all the electric heaters I can out of spite. Then I will DRIVE home. On my day off. What a bunch of crap. Try holding this on a friday at 1pm. I’d like to see that.

Turn off the lights HA! The one item that burns the least amount of energy. Try turning off your computer or your A/C for a day.

We are going the way of the dinosaurs my friend and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Its natures way and once we are gone the earth will recover and something new will walk this beatiful little ball in the sky. People are a plauge.

I think turning all the lights off and being in darkness is symbolic of the dark ages when people where ruled by superstition and fear. As advanced as we are, we still succumb to the fear and nonsense of people like Al Gore and company and ignore science.

Earth Hour and the entire Global Warming caused by man is a big hoax where non scientists like Al Gore can prosper and drive limos to meetings! I am turning on all my lights, radios,tv’s,PC’s and heaters.

Global climate change is not a big hoax and that’s not why I called Earth Hour a sham. Earth Hour is a meaningless gesture unless it leads to behavioral changes throughout the whole year. I don’t want people to think that turning off the lights for one hour once a year is all they have to do.

We’re following Earth Hour.. Here’s our family plan:

Everything in our home will get powered up. All lights ON. All hot tub pumps ON full power, The oven ON, All televisions ON, Toaster - ON (and constantly reset), Furnace fan turned up to High, All Radios ON, All cellphones charging.

Also - My 17 year old son has written a program to have all the computers in the house (7) run a complex CPU intensive algorithm.

That should do it.

Earth day, earth hour, all this crap is bullshit. every earth day and hour, i leave all house lights on, and turn everything on, and if applicable, turn it up to high, and make it work hard.
